About the Music Library
Background
The Music Library was established in 1970 and was originally housed in two locations:
- The book collection (books, scores, and journals) was housed in various floors of the former Central Library (Building 401).
- The media collection (records, audio tapes, CDs) was located in a room in the Schleifer Building (304).
- Rare and special items were stored in an office in the old Physics Building (203).
At the beginning of 2004, the entire collection was relocated to its new home in the Music Building (1005), where a dedicated library was constructed. This consolidation brought together all parts of the collection previously scattered across campus, allowing students and faculty to access all materials in one place. Furthermore, centralizing the collection enabled its management for the first time - an essential component that had previously been lacking.
The new library was donated by the Lehman family of New York in memory of their son, Chaim Menachem (Jamie), of blessed memory.
Library Structure
The library consists of two floors:
- First Floor:
This floor houses the Reference Services collection, which includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, and various types of catalogs. It also contains different formats of media items and special music scores.
Items on this floor are available for on-site consultation only and are not available for borrowing.
Students can use two computers for catalog and Database searches, as well as numerous seating areas for quiet study.
Those wishing to study in groups are welcome to use the two group study rooms located on this floor. One of these rooms also serves as a listening room, where users can listen to various media items from the collection. - Second Floor:
This floor contains the majority of the collection: books, scores, and journals, most of which are available for borrowing.
It also offers seating areas for independent study.
The library is spacious and well-lit, inviting visitors to study and make use of its diverse resources.
