The Collections in the Library and a Bit About the Information Databases

The library is focused on developing a rich and diverse collection in the fields of study and research for students, researchers, and faculty members in the Department of Psychology. This collection includes printed and electronic books, printed and electronic journals, Master's and Doctoral theses (both printed and electronic), online information databases, as well as databases and indices for locating questionnaires and research tools.

The Books and Their Classification

The Books

The library has a collection of approximately 10,000 books in English and Hebrew, including:

  • Introductory books for mandatory courses, reference books, and up-to-date textbooks (Handbooks, Textbooks)
  • Encyclopedias, dictionaries, lexicons, and reference books in the fields of psychology and psychiatry
  • New and current research literature required in all specialization tracks for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies
  • Research books on core topics researched in the Department of Psychology Some of the books in the collection are non-circulating, while others are available for borrowing for one night, three days, or a week.

Book Classification

All books in the library, in Hebrew and English, are classified by subject using the Dewey Decimal Classification system and arranged on the shelves according to their classification numbers. The books in Hebrew come first, followed by the books in English.

Master's and Doctoral Theses

The library has two collections of Master's and Doctoral theses:

  1. Master's and Doctoral Theses Written by Students in the Department of Psychology at Bar-Ilan University
    The theses are organized on the shelves in four groups:
    • Doctoral theses marked with a green sticker (not for borrowing) + electronic copy in the PRIMO catalog.
    • Master's theses marked with a green sticker (not for borrowing) + electronic copy in the PRIMO catalog.
    • Doctoral theses marked with a purple sticker (for borrowing for one week) – backup copy in case there is no electronic copy available.
    • Master's theses marked with a purple sticker (for borrowing for one week) – backup copy in case there is no electronic copy available.

      The theses are arranged on the shelves in consecutive order.
  2. A collection of Master's and Doctoral theses written in psychology departments at other universities in Israel from the early 1960s until 2013. The theses in the collection are arranged on the shelves in sequential order by number.

Journals

The Libraries and Information Division of Bar-Ilan University subscribes to important and leading electronic journals in the fields of psychology and psychiatry. In cases where the journal does not have an electronic version, the subscription is for the printed version of the journal.

In some journals, access is provided to both the printed and electronic versions of the issues from the 2000s onward, but as mentioned, most journals are available only in electronic format.

The volumes and issues of the printed journals are arranged on the shelves in the library according to the alphabetical order (A, B, C) of the journal titles, and according to the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph-Bet) for Hebrew journal titles.

To locate electronic journals using the BrowZINE software, go to the PRIMO catalog and select Search Journals from the menu at the top of the screen.

The Library and Information System of Bar-Ilan University is subscribed to a variety of online databases through which students, researchers, and faculty members from the department can access comprehensive and up-to-date publications in the fields of psychology and psychiatry. To access the online databases, visit the Library System's information website, click on "Catalogs and Electronic Resources" in the top menu, and click on the subtitle "Catalogs and Electronic Resources" once again.
